Thirty Years of Turbulence - Chinese Enterprises

Since the 1980s, the personal computer market has gradually awakened, and IBM's computers have flooded in like a tide. A lower end "PC/XT" model, even lower than the 286 model, can cost up to 20000 yuan to enter China at the port, and 40000 yuan to sell in Zhongguancun. However, these expensive computers cannot recognize Chinese characters and operate Chinese systems. Therefore, developing a "Chinese character system" suitable for the Chinese market has become an urgent scientific research project. ① At that time, many people in China were already engaged in this research and development, including Shi Yuzhu and others who later rose to fame in Shenzhen. The principles and operational processes of these "Chinese character systems" (also known as "Hanka") are similar, but what sets Ni Guangnan apart is his invention of the "associative function". Ni's Hanka utilizes the characteristics of phrases and homophones in Chinese characters to establish its own Chinese character recognition system. Compared with other Hanka technologies, it reduces the repetition rate of two character phrases by 50%, three character phrases by 98%, and phrases with four or more characters by almost no repetition. This is undoubtedly an epoch-making progress for computer Chinese character input technology.
