Liu Chuanzhi's early career as a fallen grandfather came to a gloomy end. The first "big money" that the company really earned came from the Chinese Academy of Sciences, which was complained and dissatisfied by Liu Chuanzhi every day. In early 1985, the Chinese Academy of Sciences purchased 500 IBM computers, and entrusted the acceptance, maintenance, and training services to the company, resulting in a service fee of 700000 yuan. It was through this business that Liu Chuanzhi connected with the newly established IBM China representative office, becoming the latter's main agency in China. Acting as a sales agent for IMB became Lenovo's most important source of profit in the future, and this connection could continue until Lenovo acquired IBM's PC business unit for $1.6 billion 20 years later.

For Liu Chuanzhi, another most important achievement was persuading renowned computer expert Ni Guangnan from the Chinese Academy of Sciences to join his company as Chief Engineer in the spring of 1985. Ni Guangnan is a pioneer in Chinese character information processing. Unlike the enthusiastic and outgoing Liu Chuanzhi, he has a focused and unkempt personality, possessing the talent of a scientist. The author of "Lenovo Why", Chen Huixiang, described that Liu always has a broad mind when chatting with people, while Ni likes to use highly technical and difficult questions to question the other party.
