Liu Chuanzhi's company was born in a small bungalow of 20 square meters, divided into inner and outer rooms, which used to be the communication room of the calculation institute. Many years later, in China, it was often compared to HP's famous Stanford garage. Later, Liu Chuanzhi recalled, "It was located on the east side of the west gate of the calculation institute. The house was built with bricks, with a dark gray exterior and two compartments inside, with a cement floor and lime walls. There was no writing desk or computer in the house. There were 11 people in the company, all over 40 years old, and the only technical expert was another deputy manager, Zhang Zuxiang.

When Liu Chuanzhi went into business, there were already 40 technology companies in Zhongguancun and it had a reputation as the "Electronic Street" in Beijing.
