Zhang Xingrang and Gerrich were ultimately unable to save their respective businesses, but the new management concepts they tried and spread became free textbooks for many private business owners across the country during that period. Many people later recalled that their basic understanding of enterprise management and operation was derived from these vigorous and strongly enlightening reform movements.
In 1985, the national pride that Chinese people had suppressed for a long time was expanding day by day. On the evening of May 19th, the 13th FIFA World Cup East Asia Group 2 Group A match was held at the Beijing Workers' Stadium. The national football team lost 1-2 to the Hong Kong football team and was therefore eliminated, losing the opportunity to advance from the group stage. After the competition, the audience lost control of their emotions and many people threw soda bottles at the team members, vandalized vehicles, beat drivers, injured police officers maintaining order, intercepted cars carrying foreigners, and insulted them indiscriminately. Beijing police arrested over 120 perpetrators on the spot. Among them, 38 people were detained for 12 or 15 days due to their bad and excessive behavior during and after the competition. Another 7 people violated the criminal law, and 5 of them were arrested and sentenced according to law. This was the first time in the history of New China that fans caused a disturbance, and it was classified as the "May 19th Football Incident" that year.
