In the past year or so, various criticisms and accusations against Shenzhen were raging. A northern party newspaper published a long article titled "The Origin of Historical Concessions," insinuating that Shenzhen Special Economic Zone was a new "concession." Later, another article warned against the emergence of new compradors and Li Hongzhang style figures in China. Many old officials who come to visit Shenzhen regard the special zone as heretical, exclaiming that "besides the Five Star Red Flag, socialism is no longer visible in Shenzhen" and "the special zone is called 'Zi' instead of 'She'". On January 24th, Deng Xiaoping arrived in Shenzhen. Liang Xiang, the party secretary of the special zone, pointed to the map of Shenzhen hanging on the wall and introduced the development and construction of the special zone. He said that the total output value of industry and agriculture in 1983 had doubled compared to the previous year and increased tenfold compared to 1979 before the establishment of the special zone. Liang Xiang, who was under great pressure, really wanted Deng Xiaoping's clear support attitude. He said, "The establishment of a special economic zone was initiated by you, the elderly, and a decision of the Party Central Committee. The people of Shenzhen have long hoped for you to come and see it, so that you can rest assured and hope to receive your instructions and support." However, Deng Xiaoping did not express any opinions.
