1983 was such a year: the gates of the planned economy had been pried open, and the power of the people, like a small stream gushing out of the ground, was roaming around. The desire to become rich gradually became a common ideal for the whole nation. What is slightly unsettling is that although almost everyone has a clear understanding that reform is the only way out, no one knows what the future of China and our lives will look like.
In May, the best drama troupe in China, Beijing People's Art Theatre, brought Arthur Miller's 1949 play "Death of a Salesman" to the stage, which was the first foreign drama to be performed in China after the Cultural Revolution. The protagonist Willy Loman, played by Ying Ruocheng, drives around every day with two extra large sample boxes to sell. He is over 50 years old, exhausted, still forced by loans and unable to rest. The golden age has passed, and he is facing unemployment, pressure, and a life of complete failure. In the end, Loman ended her life in loneliness.
