Thirty Years of Turbulence - Chinese Enterprises

The introduction of new policies and the enlightenment of local officials such as Ren and Yuan have made Hong Kong businessmen the first group of foreign capital to invest in mainland China. The Economist wrote in an observation article: "Nine out of ten Chinese investors who invest in Shenzhen are Chinese immigrants from mainland China to Hong Kong or Macau, and they are more likely to adapt to China's vague laws than Western investors. Considering the prospects of Hong Kong, many of them consider investing in this area as gambling... However, these Chinese investors are still cautious. Nearly 70% of foreign investment in Shenzhen is concentrated in office buildings, hotels, and other tourism facilities, and only 7.3% is invested in industrial projects

Compared to the enthusiasm of Hong Kong businessmen, European and American companies are much more cautious. The observation of the New York Times reporter is: "So far, major investors in the United States and Europe are still avoiding these economic zones. Workers are untrained, delivery and shipment are delayed, management and technical personnel are lacking, legal rights issues are volatile, and sales in the domestic Chinese market are limited, which makes major investors in Europe and America hesitant to act rashly." By the end of this year, the largest industrial investment project in Shenzhen was the Pepsi Cola factory, with a total investment of 5.5 million US dollars.
