More than 300 people attended the hearing, most of whom were intellectuals similar to Han Qingsheng. The court defense lasted for a whole day, with the prosecutor and defense counsel speaking one paragraph and ten rounds in total. This was a rare transparency in the judicial field at that time. When Yang Xia spoke, she was interrupted several times by applause from the audience due to her moving arguments. In August of that year, the Wuhan Wuchang District Court acquitted Han Qingsheng, and the prosecutor appealed to the higher intermediate court. In December, the Intermediate People's Court changed the verdict and found Han Qingsheng guilty. On that day, Han Qingsheng's family took a train to Beijing with a petition.

At this point, the Han Qingsheng case has attracted nationwide attention. At that time, the Beijing Guangming Daily, which had a great influence among intellectuals and technology personnel, conducted a discussion specifically on this matter, and letters from readers flew into the newspaper like snowflakes. Due to the lack of sound laws at that time, there was basically no right or wrong in the handling of this case, based on the considerations of law enforcement and government officials. The Han case was publicly discussed in newspapers, causing a stir in public opinion. Most of the country's scientific and technological personnel did not take the court's judgment seriously. The central leaders personally inquired about the progress of the case, and the event suddenly took a turn for the worse afterwards - such dramatic plot will happen again and again in the history of enterprises. On the evening of February 3, 1983, at 10 pm, the mayor of Wuhan came to Han Qingsheng's home with the judgment and the refunded 600 yuan to apologize.
