Ren Xiang's style played a decisive role in the recovery and opening up of the economy in southern China, and therefore there is a common saying in later generations that "Ren and Xiang single handedly promoted the development of Guangdong and Fujian". Unfortunately, both of them ended up poorly.

Ren Zhongyi worked in Guangdong for five years, experiencing ups and downs every year, and wrote several self-criticism letters to the central government. In 1985, he retired to the second line.

However, Xiang Nan was unable to land safely. In 1986, a "fake drug case" broke out in the Jinjiang area of southern Fujian, which he strongly supported. As a result, he was dismissed by the central government and became the first frontier official to be dismissed due to economic events after the reform and opening up.

In November 1997, Xiang Nan passed away. Someone wrote a biography of him, titled 'Respecting the People'.

In November 2005, Ren Zhongyi passed away.
