This year, the average per capita consumption of grain in China was 428 kilograms, an increase of 8.2% compared to 1952, and the consumption of pork was 22.3 kilograms, an increase of 88.6% year-on-year. A total of 169 million pairs of leather shoes were sold nationwide, roughly speaking, one in every ten people wears leather shoes on average. Due to population growth exceeding the construction of houses, the per capita living area in the country is 3.9 square meters, a decrease of 0.6 square meters from 1952. In order to control the continuous growth of the population, the State Council established the Family Planning Leading Group, which for the first time explicitly proposed that "it is best for a couple to have only one child". Soon, this became a basic national policy that has been strictly implemented for a long time. Starting from November 1st of that year, televisions were finally allowed to be "open for supply", prior to which they were a commodity that required quotas and approvals to be purchased. By the end of the year, the per capita retail sales of daily commodities in the country were 42.2 yuan, of which the proportion of buying "four major items" - bicycles, watches, sewing machines and televisions increased from 0.5% in 1952 to 24.5%. In that year, the highest requirement for a girl to marry a man was to have all these "four major items".
