Yuan Geng was born in Shenzhen in 1917- his early name was Bao'an. In 1949, he became the artillery commander and led his troops to liberate his impoverished hometown. Thirty years later, he once again "liberated" this land economically in his own way. In his later years, he lived in a seaside apartment in Shekou, with a view of Yuen Long, Hong Kong at a glance outside the window. He often kept a photo album at hand, which was filled with photos of him with national leaders such as Deng Xiaoping. At dusk, turning over, it feels like a world apart from the past.
