Thirty Years of Turbulence - Chinese Enterprises

"China provides land, energy, labor and raw materials, while foreign countries provide equipment, original technology, management and market experience (for example, overseas Chinese have set up factories in mainland China and export 200 buses to Hong Kong a year). Ultimately, the largest export area is Taiwan.
"Another big obstacle is protectionism. The Americans have tried to negotiate a 'market order arrangement' with China on textiles. However, China is in a position of great bargaining power. It will soon become a new supplier with great profit margins, as well as a new and very attractive market. In the near future, a flood of Chinese exports will become inevitable. Mainland China's exports will quadruple by 1990 to be just over one-third of Japan's annual exports today (equivalent to more than twice the total exports of South Korea and Taiwan today). A decade of rapid growth, plus the raw materials and crude oil it needs, will mean that China will begin to be seen as a medium-sized trading country on par with Britain today. The West should try to live with this reality."
This was the most far-sighted report on China's economic recovery by Western countries that year.

Deng Xiaoping was busy looking for examples of revitalizing Chinese enterprises around the world. In January, he visited the United States as originally planned. After Deng Xiaoping finished his visit to the United States, he arrived in Tokyo on February 7 and met with his old friend Masayoshi Ohira at the Japanese Prime Minister's residence.
